Did You Know Your Cell Phone Is Supporting Violence?

Published by cripfemme at 12:01 am under disability rights Edit This

I didn’t. I’m pissed. According to the 2009 Vagina Monologues which I saw today rape is used in the Democratic Republic of Congo in order to make the people more compliant and afraid of their government. Most the resources of the country are being sent over seas to make cell phones and play stations because you can get cheap plastic in that country.

I’m horrified but I can’t give up my phone as some people might be able to do. I need to call my assistants in the middle of the night. I need it so I don’t need to have someone with me every second of the day. I need it so if there’s an emergency people can find me.

Instead of giving up my phone I’ve opted to make a donation to the V Day project which is the organization that was begun when the Vagina Monologues were first performed. Every year they highlight some awful situations for women and girls. This year it was the Congo and cell phones. I don’t have a lot of money but I gave ten dollars. You can do that, too by going to vday.org

    Crip,
I absolve you from any attendant moral accountability secondary to using a cell phone.. Sista, there are plenty battles to be fought as regards human decency and violence. We have bigger fish to fry. Not that what your saying is not real, but its a symptom not the disease. We need to treat the disease not the symptoms. Fascism is at a dead run in the US, and getting our government under control can do more to reduce violence than any consumer boycott could ever hope to do. If we want to see reductions of violence and human rights abuses I would suggest our first step should be to recapture our democracy from the corporate thugs and war profiteers who have stolen it, then we can begin to have a profound effect on reducing human suffering globally.

I totally agree. I just don’t like it.
